Modules intégrés |
Intégrer les matières signifie les organiser de telle manière que chaque enseignement ait un lien avec les autres, dans un temps suffisamment proche pour que cela fasse sens pour l’enfant.
Nous organisons une intégration « horizontale », dans laquelle on met en place la reprise systématique des cours précédents (enseignement en « spirale »). Par exemple, nous avons un premier cours sur le rôle du squelette en biologie, qui quelques mois après est complété et repris dans les leviers en physique – les notions sont reprises en montrant comment les articulations servent de leviers. Ceci permet aux enfants qui ont mal compris le système la première fois de le revoir dans un autre cadre. En principe, les notions fondamentales sont reprises au moins trois fois.
Dans l’intégration « verticale », à l’intérieur de chaque module de 2 semaines, on veille à connecter les différents cours entre eux; par exemple, si en histoire on étudie le dévelopement des transports au XIXe, on étudiera le moteur à vapeur en sciences. L’intégration verticale ne doit toutefois pas être absolue, sous peine de devenir répétitive, et environ 20% des activités restent indépendantes des autres cours.
Un des avantages fondamentaux du travail par modules préparés est que l’enseignant n’est plus obligé de réinventer ses cours chaque année, et n’est plus restreint par les limites de ses propres connaissances et par le manque de temps. Les modules sont préparés en commun par l’équipe pédagogique qui fait aussi appel à des experts extérieurs, et ils sont ensuite améliorés et complétés chaque année (amélioration continue). L’enseignant peut alors se concentrer sur le travail avec les élèves.
Pour les enfants, l’enseignement par module est optimal; ils savent toujours où ils vont et pourquoi ils sont en train d’apprendre quelque chose, ce permet d’évacuer les problèmes de stress et d’ennui en classe. La durée de deux semaines est idéale pour des enfants de 6-10 ans (on passe à 4 semaines dès 10 ans, et à 6 semaines dès 12 ans). |

Integrated modules |
Integrating subject-matters means organising them in such a way that each subject relates to the others, in a time-span sufficiently short to make sense to the child. We have set up “horizontal” integration, in which we have organised the systematic recapitulation of the previous topics (“spiral curriculum”). For instance, we have a first topic on the function of the skeleton in biology; which is taken up a few months later in another topic, when we study levers in physics. There the basic notions are reviewed, showing how articulations work as levers for the body. This allows children who have not got the point the first time to see it again in another setting. Normally, all basic notions are reviewed three times at least.
In the “vertical” integration, in the time-frame of the two-week modules, classes are interconnected; for instance, if we study the development of transportation in the 19th century in the History class, the Science class will be devoted to the invention of engines. Vertical integration however should not be absolute in order to avoid tediousness, and about 20% of the activities remain unrelated with the main topics.
One of the main advantages of working with modules prepared in advance is that the teacher doesn’t need to reinvent his curriculum every year, and that he isn’t restricted by the limits of his own knowledge and the lack of time. The modules are prepared in common by the pedagogical team, with the help of external experts; once established, they are checked and improved every year (“continuous improvement”). Thus the teacher can concentrate on his work with the pupils. For the rchildren, the two-week framework is optimal; they always know where they are going and why they are learning something, and this eliminates boredom and stress in class. Two weeks are ideal for children from age 6-10 (from 10-12: four weeks, after 12: six weeks)..
