Le suivi individualisé |
Les enfants entrent au primaire avec une histoire propre et des apprentissages ou des savoirs très différents. Comme l’a montré une étude récente menée à Zürich, des enfants maîtrisent souvent tout le programme officiel de première année en entrant en classe, soit en calcul, soit en lecture, voire même les deux. Si rien n’est fait pour eux, la frustration et l'ennui sont au rendez-vous. Pourtant, avancer les enfants d’une classe n’est souvent pas la meilleure solution quand l’enfant est à l’aise avec ceux de son âge. De plus, il est rare qu’un enfant soit à la fois avancé en maths, en lecture/écriture, et sur le plan psychologique également.
Pour résoudre ce problème, la seule solution est l’enseignement individualisé des matières fondamentales.
Tous les enfants seront testés à l’entrée afin de déterminer leur niveau en arithmétique, lecture et écriture. Ils démarreront à leur échelon et ils sont encouragés à se dépasser. S’ils tardent à atteindre les objectifs trimestriels, ils bénéficient de mesures d’appui spécifiques. L’objectif est que tous les élèves sachent rapidement lire, écrire et calculer pour pouvoir contribuer activement à toutes les autres activités en classe.
Les enfants commencent la journée avec une période de lecture/écriture individuelle; s'ils ne savent pas encore lire, ils apprennent la lecture dans une des deux langues (français pour les francophones), et enchaînent avec l’autre quelques mois plus tard, en fonction de leurs résultats. Nous utilisons des méthodes éprouvées et nous veillons à respecter les deux étapes de l’apprentissage; après de déchiffrage, la lecture réelle est travaillée avec des textes soigneusement adaptés à l’âge des enfants. Après la pause de 10 heures, ils ont une seconde plage de travail individuel en arithmétique: chaque enfant apprend à calculer par cœur (tables des livrets, tables d’additions) dans la langue de son choix. |

Individualised follow-up |
Children enter primary school with their own background and bring very different abilities and knowledge with them. As a study performed in Zurich recently showed, children often master all or part of the official program of the first school-year upon entering school – either in maths or in reading, or even in both. If this problem is not dealt with quickly, they will probably feel frustrated and bored, and putting the child a class ahead is normally not a good solution. It is unlikely that he is at the same level in maths, reading, and social skills as well; furthermore, most young children function best within their age-group.
In order to solve this problem, the only solution is to tailor the teaching of literacy and numeracy (the fundamentum) to the current level of competence of every child. All children are given a test upon entrance in order to evaluate their ability and knowledge in these fields. Thus, they will start the curriculum at the level most appropriate for them. They will be encouraged to achieve their limits. If the trimestrial targets are not met, specific remedial action will be taken. The objective for all pupils is to be able to read, write and calculate as soon as possible in order to contribute actively to all the other activities in class.
Children start the day with a class of individualised reading/writing; they learn to read in one of the two basic languages (English for English-speaking children, French for the others), and they follow with the other language a few months later, according to their progress. We use well-tested methods and we take great care to observe the two different stages of learning to read: first comes deciphering, then comes actual reading, using texts that have been carefully adapted to the psychological age-level of the children. After the mid-morning play-break, all children have a second period of individual learning in arithmetic; they learn to calculate by heart (multiplication and addition tables) in the language of their choice.
